expat carnival-2

the most interesting food experience

I am a vegetarian. That should say a lot. I landed in Singapore, and after a month of staying in the hotel and eating at the office Food Court, I was ready to kill someone (but not eat them). Moving in to our own place was as much about the kitchen as absolutely anything else. Singapore is not too kind on vegetarians. To be fair, it is not as merciless as it could be- and I am not the most adventurous gastronomically- but there is not much to eat here. Especially for an Indian palate. And of course, I do not eat 'mock meat', so so much for that avenue.

Inevitably, and yet amazingly, my most interesting experience has been the recent one at Carnivore, a Brazilian churrascaria. After his initial amusement at a vegetarian's presence at a place called Carnivore, the waiter got me a pasta dish from a nearby restaurant, but even I was fascinated by the presentation and array of meats for the rest of the table. Ok, so my eyes don't linger longer than a few moments, but neither am I totally (or instantly) grossed out by meat.

About 10 kinds of meat (and one serving of pineapple) were brought to the table in a procession (unlimited meat). They were on long skewers (think the kind in doner kebap places), and the waiter would carve out a slice and deposit it on the plate. One of the waiters in particular- he looked more like a butcher- seemed particularly disappointed by the inevitable rejections that second and third round offerings received. The strapping fellow either went back and hacked something in despair or bawled his guts out. I guess we will never know.

I work with a bunch of guys from India who are vegetarians, and I regularly join them for meals at Indian food stalls in Yishun that are all veggie. Of course, the places also serve meat, so who knows what is added to the veggies (lard or meat juices). It doesn't seem to me like it would be that hard to be vegetarian here, especially given the preponderance of tofu, so I'm curious what it is you're looking for that you don't find.

To be honest, I am pretty unadventurous. Besides that, i did try and check things out at food courts in my first mont here, and I pretty much ended up with these choices:
mee goreng
fried rice
rice and some arbit veggies

I tired of the last two, and the third was (in quite a few places) pretty bland. Very often I was told not to take the chilli sauce either cause it is invariably in fish oil, or with prawn paste...

I guess after that, frankly, I have not chosen to go to a food court if it can be helped. Cooking at home pretty much takes care of us (me).

I am writing-and thinking- too much so maybe I should write apost sometime!
