expat carnival post -2
What has been your most interesting expat food experience?
To say I am foodie would be an understatement. To think that I like eating is undermining my love for it. To assume that I am obsessive about it would be closer to the truth I guess.
I love food. Making it and consuming it. But I am not adventurous in the least. I was in Japan on work a few years ago and all I ate was chicken… oh and potatoes! I mean how pathetic is that. So a few months or so ago I decided to start experimenting. I decided that I would go beyond just the fried fish and try other sea food preparations as well… and so a seasoned meat-eater who loves all things that swim took me (us!) to the Newton food stalls at about 1 night (was it 1am??) he ordered Cray fish, Prawns and Sting Ray.
Having recently read Douglas Adams and a sting ray account of his I was a bit skeptical. But I kept reminding myself - I must do this. I must not chicken out (haha there I go “chicken” again!!)
So I sat there waiting. It didn’t take long for the dishes to arrive. And I first tried one and then the other and then I couldn’t stop eating. Specially the sting ray. I was a little upset on the inside. But outside I was gobbling it all up. I have to admit that the cray fish was nothing to write home about and the prawns were decent but not spectacular.
So that is my single most interesting expat food experience.
I would just like to add tho that the much talked about “chilli” crab disappointed me quite a bit since I discovered that it is not in the least bit chilli!!!! Or maybe I had it at the wrong place.
Can someone please tell me – is Singaporean chilli crab supposed to be chilli or not????

Let the 'seasoned meat-eater' (who eats anything 'that used to move') take you to eat the real chilli crab (and some more new stuff). I promise you will not regret it.
:-)
You Know Who (not Mr. Woo)
i was trying to explain chilli crab.. i wrote a comment and ended up deleting it. bubblies, i just got home and i'm very drunk.
My dad use to get the chilli crab from some place in geylang, where you queue for 2 hours on weekend. I prefer Black Pepper crab on the other hand. And I dont think chilli crab is spicy. and I love Sting ray.Have you tried Butter Prawn..those are very crunchy
seasoned meateater - thankyou for all your guidance.
hakunamatata - you mad one you :)
sraikh - i guess the name should be changed from "chilli" crab to "not chilli" crab, eh???
Hi, D! I love chili string ray, too - yummy yummy yummy. And I'm with you on the slight guilt about it, as well. Jim and I actually went swimming with sting rays on a cruise a couple of years ago. Oh, well.
My chili crab was fairly disappointing, too. I had it at Jumbo, and the chili was more sweet than spicy. Just as well, though, since I got so much of it on my hands trying to get at the crab meat. I'll stick with the string ray.
